Chapter Twelve

“Make up your mind, Pansy,” Snapdragon warned. “Soon.” Her face showed her worry as she peered into the near-black water.

“Damn,” Rose cursed. “I can hardly see a thing.” She looked to where Pansy thumbed frantically through a thick, heavy book.

“Pansy—” Snapdragon wiggled her fingers. “I can’t blast them here, the space is too small.”

“And yet you managed the first one well enough.” Pansy shook her finger.

Snapdragon’s eyes flashed fire. “They weren’t surrounded by iron the last time.”

“Please, dear, just find us something.” Rose opened her hand and a small glowing light appeared over the bowl. “Can you see anything yet?”

Snapdragon bent close and nodded excitedly. “Yes, yes, I can just make out—four, Rose, there are four shadow warriors ready to attack!”

“Wind,” Pansy finally gasped. “Lots of wind.”

Snapdragon and Rose stared at her in absolute disbelief.

“What?” Pansy demanded. “We’ll blow them outside and then zap them into oblivion.”

“How are we gonna get a windstorm in the jail?” Snapdragon was not convinced in the least.

Pansy shrugged. “It’s either that or fire, your choice.”

“What about Jo and Allard?” Rose’s voice was concerned. “How do we keep them from getting caught in the storm?”

“Web spell,” Pansy offered, slamming the book shut. It floated in the air as she rushed to stand with the others. “Rose, you summon the storm, I’ll web our charges, and Snapdragon—”

“I know what I’m supposed to do!” she interrupted with a ghoulish grin.

“Okay,” Rose finally made her decision and stuck her fingers into the scrying pool. “A nice huge gust of wind…and I really hope this works,” she muttered under her breath so the others wouldn’t hear.
